Meet Your Youth Ministers

Carolyne and Joe Schoen

Carolyne and Joe Schoen have been members of St. Mary’s Parish in Sycamore since 2009.  They live in Sycamore with their three children Grace, Nate, and Olivia, who all attend St. Mary’s School.  Carolyne was hired as the Coordinator of Youth Ministry for St. Mary’s in May of 2017. Joe joined her as a volunteer at that time as well.  Prior to that they attended Christ the Teacher in Dekalb on the Campus at NIU, where both Carolyne and Joe were pursuing degrees. At Christ the Teacher, Carolyne and Joe served as Confirmation Catechists and led teens on a Mission Trip to Catholic Heart Work Camp in Nebraska.  Both Carolyne and Joe had the privilege of leading Bible Studies at Christ the Teacher as well. Prior to their time at Christ the Teacher, Carolyne and Joe were active members of the Newman Center at St. John’s Catholic Church at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana where they both attended college; this is where they met!  =) Carolyne served as a sacristan at St. John’s and attended several Koinonia retreats. Joe also attended several Koinonia retreats, served on the Koinonia service team, was a catechist for the RCIA program, participated in several Mission Trips, and was an eight-year choir member at St. John’s. Prior to her service in Youth Ministry, Carolyne served as a stay-at-home mom and before that, a Kindergarten teacher.  Joe has served as a high school teacher and coach since 2001. Both Carolyne and Joe are loving their roles as mentors and spiritual leaders for the youth of our parish!
